CPAP-ORAL APPLIANCE HYBRIDIZATION

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP)

CPAP

Airway collapsibility is reduced by the application of increased air pressure which "splints" the airway open.

Jaw stabilization for pressure leaks from mouth

NASAL / ORO-NASAL CPAP - TAP® Combination Therapy

The combination of CPAP and oral appliances is sometimes used to help patients for whom either therapy alone is inadequate to restore normal sleep physiology or quality of life. Jaw advancement using the TAP appliance, when combined with CPAP has been shown to reduce the CPAP pressure requirements to splint the airway open. The effect is to allow better sleep and to help overcome some of the objections the patient may have to the mask. For instance, the straps may not have to be so tight. If a full-face mask is required, jaw stabilization seems to make the mask seal better.

The Custom Strapless CPAP Mask

A custom device which is fabricated from a cast of the patients' upper teeth can eliminate the need for the conventional, non-custom nasal mask. "nasal pillows" or intranasal seals can be used instead of the conventional nasal mask. This device will help facilitate sleeping on the patients' side instead of on their back. In many patients, this can help maintain a more functional airway.

OA/CPAP

This device combines the strapless CPAP mask with jaw stabilization or advancement. This can reduce required CPAP pressures while eliminating mouth venting. This strapless interface will also facilitate sleeping on one's side instead of on the back.

The Vent Free™

The Vent Free™ appliance can be used for nasal CPAP patients who have problems with venting of pressures out of the mouth. This device can incorporate gentle mandibular advancement with mandibular fixation to help keep the lips sealed. Nasal CPAP pressures can be reduced, and the patient may use the device as a temporary travel alternative to the nasal CPAP.
